Identifying the Diffusion and Suppression of Political Naming in Turkey with a Matched Interrupted Time Series Design

When does choosing a child’s name become an act of political expression? Drawing on more than 28 million Turkish birth records, I investigate naming practices, political identification and repression. The paper combines a panel interrupted time-series design with comparisons among similar names to examine changes surrounding nationwide political shocks. This approach addresses the challenge of distinguishing political responses from broader cultural trends when no geographic comparison group is clearly unaffected.

Labor Union Solidarity, Occupational Risks, and Demand for Redistribution in Europe
Working paper, 2026
Why do union members support redistribution when their own need for insurance is limited? I develop an account of risk-dependent altruism, extending the argument from the affordability of redistribution to workers’ expected insurance needs. Across twenty-six European countries, the adjusted membership difference in support is largest among workers at the lowest occupational unemployment risk.

Addressing Coarsening Induced Measurement Error From Grouped Regressors
Working paper, 2026
How can researchers study continuous quantities when surveys record only broad categories? This paper develops a theoretical framework linking the reconstruction of bracketed predictors to measurement error and regression inference. Motivated by questions about economic resources and political behavior, it combines formal analysis and Monte Carlo evaluation to inform the use of grouped data in social science.
